Doing It Yourself
I’ve always wanted to do more DIY things around the house. But, as is often the case, I would find a reason to either put it off, or get in a tradesperson. Mainly just overcome by a sense of thinking I’d screw it up, as we have established in this blog, I have a deep-seated fear of failing.
This would often be met with eye rolls from my wife, because she’d say it was something I could do myself.
And you know what? She’s right.
That changed this weekend though. We’re currently in the process getting our house ready for our second child, so I needed to get my books out of the spare room. I bought some book shelves off Amazon a few weeks back that needed to be put up on the landing.
When I get home from work, I got my stud finder, drill and the spirit level and set about it. My 4-year old daughter accompanied me and passed me stuff that I needed before getting distracted with the bubble wrap.
It took a little while, but I marked things out methodically and then got the first level in:

Using the spirit level to make sure everything was level both horizontally and vertically, I got the second row in:

The final row was a bit of a pain because of the height. Also, the drill bit that I was using to put the pilot holes in, got stuck in the stud and I couldn’t get it out. So I did what any DIYer would, I put the screw in anyway. It held:

I managed to wrangle my daughter to start passing me books. This is the final result. There are a few more books around the house that I need to get on here, but I’m really proud!
